In the last seven years, the school abandonment rate in Romania has tripled for grades 1 through 4, and has quadrupled for grades 5 through 8. Additionally, some children from poor families never register for school, or register very late.
The earlier children register for school or kindergarten, the better their chances are to develop properly and to not abandon school.
Every child that does not attend school will become an adult without an education. He or she will have little chance of obtaining a job. The risk of becoming a social offender or someone who depends on social assistance his or her whole life grows dramatically. This fact has grave, long-term consequences for everyone.
Educating a child costs society much less than keeping an adult in prison or providing social assistance for an adult that cannot obtain a job. |
All children have a right to an education that permits them to develop skills so that they are prepared to contribute to society.
The law requires all children to have 10 years of schooling, starting at age 6. |
